The starting point in composing Phase B were the notes – surprisingly found in the attic – from a secret diary of a submarine captain, who, during his six-week long winter tour, finally reached the bottom. It seemed unexpectedly vibrant: lit with the remnants of inner light, it opalesced like a nacre. The dark depths above were shot through with streaks of singing: when the captain shut his eyes tighter it seemed to him that he noticed tiny reflections of sunlight in the scales of sirens’ tails afar. Heedless of the hazard he set off in hot pursuit; for a while he thought he grabbed the gist with his greedily extended hand, but all he grasped was a sextant. He finally tried to save himself by trim to the stern, but caught on sleepwalking by the able seaman apparently attracted by the noises, he spent the rest of the voyage locked in the caboose.

Punktem wyjścia przy komponowaniu Fazy B były odnalezione niespodziewanie na strychu notatki z sekretnego diariusza kapitana łodzi podwodnej, który podczas sześciotygodniowego zimowego rejsu osiągnął wreszcie dno. Zdało mu się zaskakująco pełne życia: oświetlone resztką wewnętrznego światła opalizowało jak masa perłowa. Ciemną toń powyżej przenikały smugi śpiewu: kiedy mocniej zamknął oczy zdało mu się, że dostrzega w dali drobne refleksy słońca na łuskach rybich ogonów syren. Niepomny ryzyka rzucił się w pogoń; przez chwilę sądził, że wyciągniętą łapczywie dłonią uchwycił sedno, ale okazało się, że to tylko sekstant. Próbował jeszcze ratować się trymem na rufę, ale przyłapany na lunatykowaniu przez zwabionego hałasem bosmanmata resztę podróży spędził zamknięty w kambuzie.
